Do you offer modalities other than adjusting by hand?

Absolutely.  At Belmont Chiropractic Center, we believe in a full-body theraputic approach to health.  Therefore, we use multiple means at our disposal.

For the adjustments themselves, Dr. Kendra uses multiple techniques, including adjusting by hand, using adjusting tools, and using a specialized table.  The variety of techniques and instrumenst allows Dr. Kendra to custom-tailor her treatments to each individual patient for their own comfort and optimal results.

Along with adjusting, Dr. Kendra also makes use of various cutting-edge technology like a stim machine, theraputic ultrasound, cold-laser, and other forms of therapy to help enhance patient results.

What is chiropractic care all about?

Chiropractic care is about helping the body to heal itself.  Chiropractic is a holistic approach to full body health.  Your body is an intelligent and powerful being.  It takes your everyday stresses and miniature traumas and constantly adapts.  You feed it toxic food, carry emotional stress, and physically challenge your body.

Even if you don’t notice it at first, these behaviors cause subluxations. “Subluxation” simply means that a vertebra and the corresponding motor unit (the soft tissue that surrounds it and the adjacent vertebra) are not moving correctly.  Basically, it means that a vertebra is either out of place, with respect to the bone below it, or another way to think of it is a joint that cannot move through its normal range of motion.  Early on, subluxations can exist without symptoms.  However, left unattended, they will eventually become symptomatic.

It is important to remember that subluxations, not symptoms, are the reason to have regular chiropractic checkups.  Subluxations are the problem.  Symptoms are the advanced signs that the subluxation exists.

Why focus on the spine?

The tissues that cause the biggest problems after injury are the vertebrae of the spine.  Because the spine constantly adjusts to minute changes in body position and ground surface, the spine is continuously bombarded with proprioceptive information.  (Proprioception is the ability to know where any body part is in space at a given moment).

Imagine putting your hand out and closing your eyes.  You still have a sense of where your hand is because of receptors in your joints that feed back to your brain.  The spinal joints are packed more densely with these receptors than, for example, the extremities.  This illustrates how important the spine is.

You also know that nerves that pass through the spine go to every tissue of the body.  This explains why chiropractic care can have dramatic effects with non-mechanical problems.  Digestive, cardiovascular, respiratory, metabolic and other such problems have been helped by chiropractic care through this connection with the nervous system.

How do you correct subluxation?

After an initial examination, your Doctor of Chiropractic will use an adjustment to correct subluxations.  A chiropractic adjustment is a very specific, high velocity, low force, controlled thrust by a hand, which is applied in a specific direction on a specific joint.  The aim is to restore normal motion and position to the affected joint.  This is where your own healing powers and processes step in.

The power that made the body will heal the body.  Chiropractors call this“innate intelligence.”  Essentially it means that a subluxation was causing interference in your body.  Your nervous system was being impeded by inflammation around the affected joint.  Muscles and tendons were pulled tight and unable to relax.  However, after the adjustment, your nervous system is restored and your musculoskeletal system is back to normal.  Once the body is no longer being interfered with, you can perform optimally.

What about areas other than the spine?

Dr. Kendra understands the benefits of adjusting the whole body.  That is why she also adjusts extremities.  Not only important for athletes, this practice can help alieviate symptoms from common problems like carpal tunnel.
